今から12,000年前、人類にドメスティケーションという大革命があった。ドメスティケーションとは、家畜化と栽培化のことで、人類は狩猟採集生活から脱し、農業の発明により食糧が計画的に生産、備蓄できるようになり、暮らしが楽になった。とともに、大多数の農民に寄生する、労働をしない少数の支配階級も出現した。ドメスティケーション以前の人間や、現在でも人間以外の動物たちは、ただただ生きるために全神経と時間の全てを使ってその時々の餌を採集している。かろうじて生きていることだけで精一杯であった。その後、ドメスティケーションによって何が生まれたかというと、ヒエラルキーの他に、余剰な時間、いわゆる余分なことを考える暇ができた。そして、まず第一に、人類は、生きているものは必ず死ぬ、われわれの存在とは何か？という茫漠とした、しかし根源的な不安と恐怖にとらわれることとなった。とはいえ、自分ももちろん、この世の生き物すべて死ぬ運命であるということに、毎日のように怯えながら暮らす事は大変苦しい。そこで2つの道が生まれた。自分の属する一族の祖先などを存在の根源として神話化したり、火などの自然現象に惧れを感じて拝んだり、絶対神を創造（絶対神が我々と世界を創造したのではなく、人間が絶対神を創造した。）し、「信じる」ことで、いかに人智を超えた謎に対する不安や恐怖をなかったことにするか、という態度が宗教となり、もう一方、その、不安と恐怖を伴う謎を、どこまでも解きあかそうという態度が哲学となった。どちらも、虚無感から人を救うことにはなる。
さて、様々な科学が発展した20世紀ですら、哲学はこの世界の存在意味を解明できなかったが、生まれた当時の科学のレベルを基にして、世界の仕組みを説明する答えを完結させた宗教は、その後の人類の科学的発見や発明の進化によって、多くの間違いを指摘されてきたのは事実だ。そして、２１世紀も5分の１まですぎた。
未だに、知り合いのプロテスタントの牧師さんは、1860年代、ダーウィンから始まる進化論は、一部の学者によるロマンチックな科学的推論にすぎなく、ありえないという。この世界の全ては、全能の神によって創造されたので、それ自体、完璧な設計図に基づいており、オートマチックに進化するはずがないのだそうだ。とはいえ、DNAの解明によって、実学的にも実業的にも、特に医学においてもあらゆる場所ですでに有効に進化論の成果は実現化されている。
話は変わるが、第一次世界大戦後、ドイツでは、ワイマール憲法が出来、とてもリベラルな社会が構築されるだろうという予想を覆して、ナチスに蹂躙された。
時間軸のプラスの方向に向かって、社会はナチュラルに、より良い方向を選択するという考えは、大変無責任であって、ポピュリズムに乗って、劣化することはある。今現在の、自国オンリー、ファーストなどのナショナリズムの復活のように。
それに対してより良い新しくリベラルな論理と世界の解明は、すぐれた人智の重なりによって、進化することはあっても、劣化してはいけない。
まさしく日が昇るようであった戦後から1990年のバブルの崩壊まで、経済的豊かさをバックに日本のアートシーンは骨太に進化に向かっていたが、おびただしい作品群の値下がりに、アートの進化に寄与してきた進歩的コレクターが一気にいなくなった。
そこで新たに参入してきたコレクターは、漫画アートや写真を写した美人モデルのポートレートというわかりやすい画像の作品を買っている。少なくとも美術史を勉強したものとしては、漫画アートは１９世紀末パリのサンボリズムの亜流だし、美人モデルポートレートも、１９世紀パリのサロン派の亜流に見えて、ふたつとも、いつのまにか美術史において真ん中を流れる大河の脇を小さく流れている、といったように思える。
表現者として、未来へより良い方向に流れる流れには、流されるべきだと思うが、ときに流れは過去へと退化への道を進むこともあって、そういう流れには、たった一人でも抗ってせいぜい邪魔となりたい。

Still, a Protestant pastor who I know says that the theory of evolution starting from Darwin in the 1860s is only a romantic scientific reasoning by some scholars and is wrong.Everything in this world is created by the Almighty God itself, based on God’s perfect design, so it can not be evolved automatically.Nevertheless, the elucidation of DNA has already made the results of evolution effective in practice, in business, and especially in medicine.

Therefore, new collectors have bought artworks that are easy to understand: cartoon art and portraits of beauty models drawn by looking at photos.
At least for me who learned art history, Japanese cartoon art is a substream of Paris symbolism in the late 19th century, and portraits of beautiful models also look like a substream of the 19th century Parisian salon paintings. Both seem like a small stream flowing by the side of a large river in the middle of the art history.
