西洋では、プラトン以来、受け取る側に関係なく、普遍的な存在美があり、その定義について、思考されてきた流れと、その、思考の当事者こそが主体である個人なのだから、美は、感じたがわの主観による、と心理学や精神医学から思考する流れがあるという。美しく無いものがあるからこそ際立つ美なのだが、その最大公約数は、時代、社会背景や、個人によって揺らぐので、定義を固定することは出来ない。また、現代では、醜も美とみなすこともある。私は、美にたずさわる者として、常に、揺らぐ美とは何かについて、これもまた、サーベイの対象にしなければならない。
アンドレ・セラノのPiss Christについて考えてみる。キリストを中心にオレンジゴールドに輝く映像は、背後からいく筋かの光が差しこんで、神々しさを湛え、水玉が宇宙に渦巻く銀河系のようだ。
さて、この作品は、水槽にアンドレ・セラノ自身の尿を溜めて、そこにプラスチック製のキリストが磔られた十字架を沈め、写真に撮ったものだ。
アンドレ・セラノは２万ドルの全米芸術基金、原資は国民の税金を得ていたため、激怒した人に展示中にこの作品をハンマーで破壊されたり、脅迫文を送られるなど大変な騒動を引き起こした。日本では、総理大臣が国会で指名されると、天皇に任命されるように、アメリカでは、大統領は議会でキリスト教のバイブルに手を乗せて就任宣誓するのだから、アメリカは、立派なキリスト教国と言える。そこで、キリストを尿に沈めれば、敬虔な信者から、かなりの反発を受けても仕方がない。しかし、実は、アンドレ・セラノもまた、キューバ出身の母の血を引く敬虔なカトリック信者だという。それまでの生き方も、麻薬中毒者であったり、売人でもあって、決して平坦ではなかったそうだ。絶えず、神の存在を信じながらも、厳しい試練が繰り返し身を襲った場合、それでも神の存在を一度たりとも疑うことはないのだろうか。麻薬に汚染されたアンドレの尿に、安いプラスチックのキリスト像を沈めてしまう。尿を、不潔な排出物として、ケガレさせた、という解釈もあるが、自分の体内から出たものだからこそ、自分のテリトリーに犬や猫が尿でマーキングするように、キリストと最短の関係になりたいという切実な願いがあったのではないか。アンドレ・セラノ自身は、十字架像などの商品化に対するアンチテーゼだ、と言っているが、もっと深い、彼の存在に対する神への愛着を感じてしまうのは、私の勝手かもしれないが、美が私の主観によるものであるのなら、それでも良いと思う。
