美とは？-3
美という文字は、3000年前、中国で生まれた。5万年前ほどに、丸太船に乗って、アラビア半島沿いに脱アフリカをした我々の祖先は、あるものたちは真北を目指し、カスピ海方面に行き、コーカソイド、白人種となり、あるものたちはユーラシア大陸の東北を目指して、アルタイ山脈付近で厳しい自然環境に閉ざされて、モンゴロイド、黄色人種となった。アフリカにとどまったものたちは、黒人種として今にいたる。
さて、私はモンゴロイドである。どうやら、一番厳しい自然環境で長い間とどまることになった我々の祖先は、吹きすさぶ黄砂混じりの凍った風の中で、体温を奪われないように、頭部の表面積を少なくするように、頭骨は球に近くなり、コーカソイドや黒人種に比べ、絶壁、腫れぼったい顔になった。また、黄砂を背景に、保護色として、肌が黄色くなったのだという。
さて、なぜこんなことをくどくどと書いたのかというと、我々の祖先は、ずいぶんと厳しい自然環境に置かれた、ということである。原始宗教が誕生して、神という概念が生まれ、神の怒りが厳しい自然環境の原因を作り、しばしば家族の命を奪うと考えれば、神を祀る際に、神が災厄をもたらす前に、一族を代表した生贄を選び、その命を捧げる風習が生まれた。

素晴らしく科学の進化した現代でも、自然の猛威によって大勢の人々が亡くなるのだから、古代の人々は、いきなりにして、現代よりも何倍もの大勢の家族や部落の仲間たちの命を奪われてきた。神の怒りを抑えるために、部落を代表した生贄の死を以って供物として捧げられたのは人間であったが、家族やメンバーの中から代表を選ぶことは大変辛いことに違いない。ということで、人間の次に大切な、経済動物である羊を選ぶことにしたのである。
ところが、人間の代わりに生贄になるのだから、その羊は村一番の立派な羊でなくてはならない。
美という字は羊と大が組みあわさってできている。大きな羊である。象形文字として、大を後ろ足と見て、羊が後ろ足をひろげたところという解釈もある。
美は、生贄であり、それは自己犠牲の精神である。自己犠牲の犠に含まれる義という字は、羊と我の会意文字である。我という字は、大きな刃物を象形している。我という刃物を自分に投影する、というところがなかなか詩的で味わい深い。古代モンゴロイドは、獲物や家畜を屠畜し、肉を切り分ける者は、部落のメンバー全てに同量の肉を切り与えるという公平さを大切にしてきた。羊の肉を切る際に、義には、そうした責任を負うものとしての精神が含まれていて、犠は牛篇を部首にしているのだから、ますます自分を正し、仲間のために尽くす、という意味合いが強くなる。
こうしてみると、楔形文字から発生した表音文字のドライさに比べて、黄河文明で支配階級に極めて近い非常に知的なデザイナーによってデザインされた象形文字に、彼らの道徳観を見ることができて面白い。
我々日本人が漢字、そしてそれを簡略化したひらがなで読み書きを学ぶうちに、知らず知らずに古代中国人の気高い精神性に触れてきたことになる。
古代では、医療の発達した現代と違って多くの仲間が成人するまでに命を落とす。部落を構成するメンバーは一人ひとりが大切な役割を持って力を合わせなければその部落の発展がなかった。そのぶん、たくましく成人する能力もあり、また成人したメンバーは、部落の中での自分の立場を前向きにとらえて、美が自己犠牲である、という精神を疑うことなく受け入れたであろう。
現代ではどうか。大抵は、生まれた時から衣食住に恵まれて、何不自由なくオートマチックに学校に通い、成人するのだから、どうして自分が生まれてきたのか、自己役割の喪失感はとても大きい。誰かに頼まれたり、または自分でのぞんだ記憶のないままに気がついたらこの世界に生きている。
古代では、自己犠牲というふるまいが美しいとされてきたが、これではさまよう現代人にとって立つ瀬がないので、素のまま、生きているだけで美しい、とか、能力があって自分の役割を生き生きとこなすエリートに対して、ついつい持ってしまう妬みや憎しみのともなう暴力的破壊行動も、それが「業」なのだと認め、そのエネルギーを実社会に向けるよりは、表現芸術に向けて発散することも必要で、そうなると、ピカレスクロマンやバッドエンディングなものであっても、見逃すことのできない大きなエネルギーを照射する作品もまた、美という自己犠牲という範疇からは外れてしまうが、優れていると言える。
